ROCKS
ABOUT
A hard substance formed by the combination of one or more minerals is called rock.
TYPES
(1) IGNEOUS ROCK
The word igneous comes from the Latin word 'ignis' meaning 'fire'.
Magma is extremely hot molten material found deep inside the earth. This magma cools down just below the earth's surface. It then hardens to form igneous rocks.Even sometimes, when the volcanoes erupt, they throw out lava. This lava als hardens to form igneous rocks.
It is classified as :
* Intrusive igneous rock
* Extrusive igneous rock
(2) SEDIMENTARY ROCKS
The action of wind and running water take away soil and small pieces of rocks into rivers, lakes and seas. They sink to the bottom and settle down to form layers called sediments. The continuous pressure upon the bottom layers, solidifies these layers into rocks. Sedimentary rock can be defined as a rock formed from sediments.
It is classified as :
* Clastic sedimentary rocks
* Chemical sedimentary rocks
* Organic sedimentary rocks
(3) METAMORPHIC ROCKS
The word metamorphic is a combination of two words, 'meta' meaning 'change and 'morphic meaning of form'.
The rocks formed by the action of immense heat and pressure on sedimentary rocks or igneous rocks such that their contents change completely are called metamorphic rocks.
It is classified as :
* Foliated metamorphic rocks
* Non- Foliated metamorphic rocks
